U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) unveiled a redesign of the green card and Employment Authorization Document (EAD) to include enhanced security features.
Changes include more detailed artwork, raised surfaces, and holographic images on the front and back.
The federal agency said it would start issuing the redesigned cards starting January 30, 2023.
“This redesign further demonstrates USCIS’ commitment to taking a proactive approach against the threat of secure document tampering, counterfeiting, and fraud,” said USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddou in a statement. “Consistent updates to secure documents, informed by our knowledge of the latest methods of bad actors and the innovation and ingenuity of our staff, ensure the continued integrity of secure documents issued by our agency.”
Some green cards issued after the rollout date will still reflect the old design while USCIS uses up existing cardstock. Any older green cards issued before the redesign will remain valid until the card’s expiration date, the agency said.
